Thailand has legalized the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes since 2018, but on June 9, 2022, the country joined the list of nations that have legalized cannabis for recreational purposes. This move comes as a surprise for many since Thailand has notoriously upheld its tough stance against drugs; including the use of marijuana, in the past.

Despite widespread skepticism and opposition, this newly introduced law has been received positively by many. The move is expected to pave way for national reforms in the health and justice system, create jobs, and reduce crime rates. It has been rooted in public health benefits since it will provide a safe and legal way for people to consume cannabis, and the law is aimed at curbing the demand for illegal drugs.

Many argue that the long-overdue legalization is a step towards progress, and with the advent of technology and a generation that seeks change, it was only a matter of time before the old notion was challenged.

Cannabis is not harmful, and contrary to popular belief, it is a medicine capable of helping patients improve their quality of life. It is not only beneficial for treating pain, glaucoma, mental health disorders, and other ailments, but it has also been reported to be helpful in controlling seizures and providing relief for cancer patients.

It’s no secret that cannabis has the potential to generate significant revenue for the country. Moreover, it can generate jobs and help the economy, which has been strained over the past years by the pandemic.

In conclusion, the legalization of cannabis in Thailand is a defining moment, and the country’s lawmakers and citizens should welcome it with open arms. We should take note that Cannabis is not a gateway drug, and the fears that come with its usage have been created by a propaganda machine that has run its course. It is time to embrace practical policies that are rooted in scientific research and not influenced by rhetoric.
